Spain has more restaurants in the top 50 worldwide than any other country, according to 2023 rankings by a United Kingdom media company that annually rates restaurants.
Spain has six restaurants in the top 50 and 10 restaurants in the top 100, says the media company, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. France also has 10 in the top 100 and four in the top 50.

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants initially released its top 50 list and later released restaurants ranked 55-100 before a June 20 awards ceremony, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, in Valencia, Spain. At this reporter’s request, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants sorted the top 100 restaurants by country.
The top 100 restaurants were determined, the media group says, by votes of “1,080 independent authorities from the world of gastronomy — from renowned international chefs and food journalists to travelling gastronomes.” The World’s 50 Best Restaurants has named the top restaurants annually since 2002 and decided in 2019 that the No. 1 restaurant each year cannot repeat as No. 1 in future years.
This year’s No. 1 restaurant is Central in Lima, Peru. Central’s menu, according to The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, “takes diners through myriad different Peruvian ecosystems categorized by altitude — from below sea level in the Pacific Ocean to the high peaks of the Andes. Each dish reflects the origin of its ingredients, from dry valley (shrimp, loche squash and avocado) to Amazonian water (pacu fish, watermelon and coca leaf).”
Four other restaurants in Peru are in the top 50, and another Peruvian restaurant ranks 59th.
Restaurants in Spain rank No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 in the world.
No. 2, Barcelona’s Disfrutar, was founded by three chefs who aimed, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants says, to “create food that surprises and delights in equal measure, using modern technique and pristine ingredients that challenge traditional preconceptions of fine dining.”

Two U.S. restaurants rank in the top 50, and six are in the top 100.
The highest-ranking American restaurant is No. 8 Atomix in New York. According to The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, Atomix accommodates diners at a 14-seat basement counter and offers “a well-paced 12-course tasting menu of Korean-based but highly original plates, featuring world-class flavor and texture combinations.”
